International Events

HypnoThoughts Live, Las Vegas

In July, I was delighted to attend (yes, in person!) the awesome HypnoThoughts Live conference in Las Vegas.

It was an honour to be asked to deliver a four-hour workshop teaching a Hypno-EMDR technique, a 1-hour talk on therapist self-care and a two-day postcon on Hypno-EMDR skills. All sessions were very well attended and, as they had been designed to be highly practical, it was great to see attendees really engage with the work. It isn’t too early to book your tickets for next year’s Hypnothoughts and take full advantage of their early bird offers. You too will be able to see the spectacular lights in the conference rooms (see pic below).

Dr Kate teaching Hypno-EMDR; a combination of hypnotherapy and EMDR. The picture shows one of the convention rooms at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas at the Hypnothoughts conference, with a finger intruding into the picture to highlight the ornate ceiling lights.

Dr Kate teaching Hypno-EMDR; a combination of hypnotherapy and EMDR. The picture shows one of the convention rooms at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas at the Hypnothoughts conference with a very swirly patterned carpet.

This is a magnificent conference, with an awesome community of diverse interests coming together; friendly, welcoming and happy to share what they know. As you can see in the pics, the conference rooms are certainly not bland and neither is the lunch that the conference provides each day. It is amazing how quickly four buffet lines can enable 1,000 people to sit down and eat together.

A picture showing the vastness of the ballroom where lunch is served every day, the closest table showing people eating. The ornate decor of the room is shown.

H-EMDR – Iceland

Hypno-EMDR certainly is popular. I am just home from teaching H-EMDR in depth, over five days, to a lovely group of hypnotherapy students and graduates in Iceland.

It is a tricky language to learn, so although I know a few words of Icelandic, it was helpful that English is widely understood. I am most appreciative of the efforts of the students to focus so thoroughly; learning a technique in another language takes effort!

When I wasn’t teaching, I was able to explore more of Iceland (this is my second time). It truly is a spectacular country and I was fortunate to have two nights where the Northern Lights were visible.

Whilst the food is definitely on the higher price scale, everything I had was of awesome quality and beautifully presented. It was fascinating as well to explore some of the local beliefs and folklore (and meet a few trolls).

Dr Kate was teaching hypnotherapy and EMDR in Iceland and wondered if a troll could be hypnotised. The picture is Dr Kate reaching out to a rather large troll.

National Events

World Extreme Medicine Conference 2021

The World Extreme Medicine logo with red, white and blue in a circle saying World Extreme Medicine Pushing Boundaries. In November 2021, I was delighted to be invited to speak at WEM21 in Edinburgh, giving medics and emergency responders training on how they can use self-hypnosis in extreme situations.

I am delighted to announced that my self-hypnosis training has now also been made available, via WEM, to those working on the front line in active conflicts, including the Ukraine.

I specially designed this training so that those using it can enter and work in self-hypnosis wherever they are, even on a noisy transporter!

National Council for Hypnotherapy Conference

The National Council for Hypnotherapy Logo which is purple and blue initials and the wording in full in the rectangle underneath. We all know that self-care is important, but do we make time for it?

The National Council for Hypnotherapy certainly recognises its importance, giving me the opportunity to talk at their annual conference, which made use of Airmeet, a superb online platform.

Safety & Health Expo 2022

The Safety and Health Expo logo with green and black letters. It was delightful to be invited to speak at the Safety & Health Expo at London ExCeL in May.

In a way, it was a landmark event.

Although I have presented at many safety and health events over the years – my previous career was as a Chartered safety and health practitioner and risk manager – this was the first time my conference talk actually had ‘hypnotherapy’ in the title: Hypnotherapy & Workplace Wellbeing.

My presentation explored how hypnotherapy approaches can help boost workplace wellbeing. It started by exploring the facts and fiction of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, and moved on to consider some of the powerful psychological and physiological benefits of hypnosis, supported by key research.

Federation of Holistic Therapists Virtual Conference 2022

The Federation of Holistic Therapists logo with their initials and a person in a world balanced on open hands. The Federation of Holistic Therapists conference was online this year.

This gave them the opportunity to go all out and offer a whole week of seminars, some pre-recorded and some live.

I was delighted to present a session entitled ‘Self-Care Approaches using BLS’.

This session offered a range of self-care and development tools which are enhanced by the use of bilateral stimulation (BLS). As well as providing a valuable resource for general self-care applications by therapists, these approaches can be taught to clients to support the in-session work and for use outside of the therapy session.

Forthcoming Events

UK Hypnosis Convention 2022

The UK Hypnosis Convention Logo which is written in gold text on a dark green background.I am excited to be speaking at the UK Hypnosis Convention at the Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel in November. I will be presenting a two-hour interactive session on Hypno-EMDR.

It is on Friday, the first day of the convention, at 8:30am. Yes, I know, it is early. But… I can assure you it will be worth it.

The organisers have allocated me to the Kew Theatre. If you have never visited the conference before, the 1970 retro style room alone is worth the visit.

When you join this highly practical, interactive workshop, you will get three set of tools.

  1. You will learn a rapid method for developing resources using Hypno-EMDR, which can be used with clients in-person and online
  2. You will learn how you can apply the 9-phase Hypno-EMDR method within your hypnotherapy practice for a diverse range of applications, illustrated by brief case histories
  3. You will also find out how to use H-EMDR for therapist self-care and use to avoid and address vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue

So, please do join me for this lively, informative and truly useful ‘EMDR Tools for Hypnotherapists’ session on Friday 11 November, starting at 8:30am. I look forward to meeting you there.

Books

Two copies of Persuasive Therapy: 101 Ways to Influence Your Therapy Clients book by Dr Kate Beaven-Marks is on show. This is a black cover with a pink image and white text.

In September 2021, I released my new book, entitled Persuasive Therapy: 101 Ways to Influence Your Therapy Clients.

This book offers a range of effective strategies that you can employ to significantly enhance your talking therapy approaches. It provides you with the practical tools to rapidly and effectively guide, persuade and influence your clients, helping to optimise whichever therapy approaches you are using.

Each strategy is clearly explained, together with illustrative case studies and development tasks which have been designed to enable you to rapidly grow skills and achieve mastery more quickly.

The many positive comments I have received about this book were a wonderful incentive to get started on my next book. I am excited to say that it is a self-contained model for hypnotherapy! The first draft is written, and it is now in the editing stage. I will keep you updated on when it will be released.

Online Courses

Three pictures showing the hypnosis-courses com images for firstly Ego Strengthening 101 course, with a brain holding a barbell. Secondly, the Monetise Your Therapy Practice course, showing a plant growing out of a pile of coins. Thirdly is the Hypno-Dough course, with a hypnotic spiral and some playdoh and modelling clay.

My company, Hypnosis-Courses.com, has been busy launching some great new online courses, including one on ego strengthening, one on how to earn more money as a therapist and also the amazingly-popular Hypno-Dough.

The Hypno-Dough technique is great for creating powerful subconscious change and clients really enjoy being able to take home a representation of that change!

There are also four exciting new courses which have been filmed and are now at the manual writing stage. If you haven’t yet signed up to the hypnosis-courses.com mailing list, now is the time to do so. This ensures that you are one of the first to know about new releases and also any special ‘mailing-list only launch offers’.

Supervision

Whether you are brand new to hypnotherapy or have been working as a hypnotherapist for a while, even a few decades, hypnotherapy supervision helps keep you on track and is a superb form of professional development.

Individual and research supervision

Therapy (individual) supervision and mentoring sessions, and also research supervision sessions are now available online and can be booked in multiples of 15 minutes.

This means that you only need to book the time you require.

In-person supervision is also available for bookings of one hour or more.

Group supervision

The group supervision continues to be very popular and places are capped to 10 people each month. To secure your place, remember to book early.

Sessions are conducted online via Zoom and are held mid-week (days vary) from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  Each session is different, depending on what hypnotherapists bring to the session.

The group supervision session generally starts with introductions and the agenda, followed by a warm-up case to get everyone thinking and discussing how the client issue or ethical quandary could be dealt with. Then each hypnotherapist has an opportunity to present a case (anonymised) that they will, are or have worked with and the group will discuss it. Therapists can also bring marketing and business challenges to the group. Towards the end, there is an update on CPD and development and any news in the hypnotherapy world is discussed. Finally, at the end of the session a supervision attendance certificate is issued.

Forthcoming dates for the remainder of 2022 are 26 October, 23 November and 21 December.

Working With The NHS

A picture of the front window where Dr Kate visited the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental Hospital; clinical hypnotherapyIn recent years, I have spent some time working on the wards of a teaching hospital, providing clinical hypnosis to patients. More recently – since lockdown – I have been busy working for quite a while with NHS staff, helping them with self-care, relaxation and mindfulness approaches.

Additionally, I am now back to consulting (on site) on complex cases, working with staff using hypno with patients.

I am also back to training NHS teams in the use of hypno and EMDR.

It is wonderful to hear the reports (anonymised, of course) of how they have used these techniques for positive outcomes.

And finally…

That’s me all caught up for now. To get the most up to date news, keep an eye on the HypnoTC Facebook Group.

I am super excited to announce that I will be speaking at the Safety and Health Expo on 17 May 2022 at London ExCeL. Why am I so excited? Although I have given presentations at many health and safety related events and conferences, this is the first time my presentation, entitled Hypnotherapy and Workplace Wellbeing, actually has ‘hypnotherapy’ in the title.

Hypnotherapy and Workplace Wellbeing

I will be speaking about how hypnotherapy approaches can be used to increase workplace wellbeing. My presentation starts by clarifying the facts and fiction of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I will then go on to explore some of the powerful mind and body benefits of hypnotherapy in the workplace, supported by key research.

From a hypnotherapy perspective, much can be done to support mental and physical health in the workplace. Whilst it is true that in recent years, much has been done to develop a health and wellbeing agenda, a health and wellbeing at work survey conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and SimplyHealth, in 2021, the survey indicated that 27% of organisations are still more ‘reactive’ than ‘proactive’ and only 67% of managers consider wellbeing important.

The report also indicated that mental health is the most common focus of health and wellbeing activity, with aspects such as stress management, work-life balance, lifestyle choices and physical health all receiving attention. However, whilst eye tests were commonly provided as a wellbeing initiative (67% of organisations surveyed), just 15% offered access to a complementary therapy. This was the least provided out of all health promotion initiatives, with physical health such as yoga classes and the offers of fitness trackers being much more likely to be offered.

Hypnotherapy in the workplace boosts wellbeing as shown by this picture of people laying on mats on the floor, with their eyes closed.

It would seem that the reactive response to mental health is still more common, with a gradual increase in access to talking therapy rising from 56% in 2016 to 74% in 2021. This is supported by the findings that stress continues to be one of the most significant causes of both short and long-term absence from work, with a staggering 91% of survey respondents reporting stress-related absence in the last year in organisations with over 250 employees (79% in smaller companies). In addition, 21% considered their organisation was ineffective at addressing stress.

Can hypnotherapy help with wellbeing in the workplace?

So, can hypnotherapy help? Absolutely! It offers both proactive and reactive measures that can be taught, easily and effectively to employees, so that they are empowered in their own mental and physical health self-care. My presentation will outline a range of approaches than can be adopted organisation-wide, and which can be used as a standalone wellbeing strategy or alongside existing approaches.

The Safety and Health Expo is a Safety and Health Practitioner event, and is one of five themes at the show. The Safety and Health Expo is the UK’s biggest health and safety event and has around 20,000 visitors, mainly health and safety, occupational health and risk management professionals who are keen to explore the latest technology and gain information from significant figures in the industry.

The other co-located events include FIREX International, providing a global centre of excellence for fire safety information, together with security and alarms being the key focus of IFSEC International. The other two events are the Facilities Show, with a focus on smarter and more efficient solutions for the workplace and Intelligent Building Europe, which gives you the opportunity to find out more about smart building technology.

Interestingly, many of the event speakers have messages that will resonate with hypnotherapy practitioners and those interested in hypnosis. One of the other speakers is Louis Theroux, the documentary-maker, producer and writer, who will be talking about his diverse TV experience, and his investigations which have included alcohol addiction, dementia care and a look into American psychiatric treatment centres.

A picture of Louis Theroux in a blue shirt with glasses. to find out more about Dr Kate's course https://hypnotc.com/contact-hypnotc-the-hypnotherapy-training-company/

Another speaker is Mandy Hickson, who is one of the first female pilots to serve in a Tornado GR4 squadron. She will talk about how to define and action specific goals in high-pressure situations. Bruce Durham, Director of Human Performance at Huddle Culture also has a fascinating presentation, ‘Practical Body Language Awareness’. He has taught body language awareness for over 15 years and certainly seems popular, reporting a social media following of over 200,000 and in excess of 10 million views of his videos, helping people to better connect and communicate with each other.

Other interesting speakers include Fred Streefland, a Cyber Security Director, and Heather Beach, who has studied both Applied Positive Psychology and Relational Organisation Gestalt. She will be talking about the cultural approach to wellbeing. Also on the psychology theme, is Hugo Metcalf, Chief Psychologist at The Happy Mind Tribe. It will be interesting to hear from a multiple world record holder how we can recognise and respond to mental health crises. For those interested in specific topics, Mike Oliver, Workplace Sleep Ambassador Programme Manager at The Sleep Charity will be exploring sleep issues and the impact of the lack of good sleep.

In addition to a fascinating range of speakers there are many health-related exhibitors, from 39 different countries around the world, making it truly an international event!

Happy World Hypnotism Day Party

Happy World Hypnotism Day (and a happy New Year to you too whilst we’re at it)! Yes, January the 4th is World Hypnotism Day. Now, you might be thinking ‘really? another “day” to celebrate something…’ but don’t worry, you don’t have to buy any gifts, send cards or even wish anyone a happy World Hypnotism Day (if you don’t want to). World Hypnotism Day is simply a time to appreciate all things hypnosis-related. Whether you think of hypnotism in terms of helping people with hypnotherapy or perhaps the ‘stage hypnosis’ side of things where hypnosis is used for entertainment, it’s undeniable that hypnotism is a fantastic skill that can help people to improve various aspects of their lives, as well as being used for a bit of light-hearted fun too!

According to ‘daysoftheyear.com’, World Hypnotism Day began in 2006 and was dedicated in the honour of Dr. Jack Gibson (1909-2005). Dr Gibson was an Irish hypnotherapist and surgeon, widely remembered for his advocacy of hypnosis as an alternative form of anaesthesia for use in surgery (instead of anaesthetic drugs). In fact, he is on record stating that he performed over 4,000+ operations using hypnotic anaesthesia as the only form of pain management! Pretty impressive, so you can see why he might have inspired World Hypnotism Day.

World Hypnotism Day was established with the sole purpose of dispelling the (many) myths surrounding hypnotism (which mostly exist thanks to Hollywood movies and popular literature). No matter how many hypnotists and hypnotherapists that are out there dispelling myths and misconceptions, people’s first ideas about what hypnosis is and how it works will often be from the media. As a student of hypnotism, it’s certainly worth learning early on about the myriad of hypnotic myths that are out there. If you’re new to the world of hypnotism, check out our blog on hypnotic myths and misconceptions.

How do you celebrate World Hypnotism Day? Well, as it’s a day dedicated to learning and sharing what we know about hypnosis, it’s a great opportunity to get out there and talk about hypnosis/hypnotherapy with people. By offering demonstrations of hypnotism, the general public can learn about what hypnosis is (and what it isn’t), as well as how they might benefit from hypnosis themselves. Word-of-mouth is a powerful tool, so if you’re out there talking to people about hypnosis, it’s likely that you’ll get lots of opportunities to use hypnosis and perhaps even pick up some clients along the way!

Some hypnotherapists like to provide ‘special offers’ for World Hypnotism Day, perhaps offering a number of discounted (or even free) sessions. Stage and street hypnotists can go out and hypnotise people for fun, demonstrating how hypnosis can be entertaining, whilst dispelling myths along the way. There are many opportunities to ‘celebrate’ World Hypnotism Day in your own way, and potentially in a way that can benefit your business as a hypnotist or hypnotherapist whilst having a bit of fun!

As World Hypnotism Day is all about learning and sharing hypnosis information, here are a whole bunch of links to useful blogs/videos that will help you on your way to learning all about hypnotism. Starting firstly with some information on the late Dr. Jack Gibson:

What happened after we qualified with HypnoTC – Dylan & Chelsea https://hypnotc.com/post-qualification-experience-dylan-chelsea/ Wed, 19 Dec 2018 11:10:16 +0000 https://hypnotc.com/?p=2758 My name is Dylan Lovegrove and both my partner Chelsea and I completed the HypnoTC hypnotherapy training course, graduating in October 2017. My name is Dylan Lovegrove and both my partner Chelsea and I completed the HypnoTC hypnotherapy training course, graduating in October 2017. Since then, we’ve been in practice seeing paying clients and it’s been a great experience, with lots of opportunity to learn and develop…

We launched our hypnotherapy company, ‘Freeing Minds Hypnotherapy’, with a self-designed logo and a mountain of enthusiasm! We were ready to go! Upon ‘opening our doors’, the first clients that we saw mostly seemed to be weight loss, which was something of a relief. Even though we learned how to effectively work with the majority of issues and goals that clients might present with, seeing a client with high level anxiety, complete with panic attacks and agoraphobia as a first client… Well, that would have been like jumping into the deep end of the pool after just having learned how to swim (though I’m sure we would have coped if that had happened).

Being gently introduced into the real-world of working with clients on ‘simpler’ issues like weight loss and smoking cessation, it quickly became apparent that clients who walk through the door asking for one thing normally have a list of bigger issues to first resolve! For example, with my first 4 clients who came for help with weight loss, I discovered they had some more complex emotional issues holding them back, that needed addressing first! This set me up to understand and respect exactly how to best help the client and to always prepare for the unexpected! It also made me thankful that when training with HypnoTC, we learned how to work with the client’s experience of their issue (and contributing factors), rather than assuming ‘all issues are the same’ and being limited to a generic ‘weight loss script’… It’s definitely a bit more complex than that!

As I continued to see (mainly) weight loss and smoking clients, Chelsea was beginning to deal with clients who suffered from anxiety issues. She has helped many people overcome anxiety, from simple anxiety cases through to fear of driving and even a couple of young girls with severe panic issues! Finding some great results from working with so many clients, Kate Beaven-marks (HypnoTC tutor) came up with the idea of Chelsea and I joining together to deliver ‘dual therapy’ for our clients (so 2 therapists to 1 client). After many conversations and ideas of how we could structure the dual therapy, we decided that because I favour a more direct/authoritarian approach, and Chelsea is more indirect and permissive, we felt this could work to our advantage, especially if we noticed the client favouring one of us more whilst delivering hypnotic suggestions!

We set up our next session to incorporate the dual therapy process within the initial email, giving full information about myself and Chelsea as well as the proposed dual therapy session. Also, before the session began, we confirmed with the client that they felt comfortable with this new dual therapy approach, and gave them a choice between the two of us!

When the client entered our premises, we both had a pre-agreed plan on how the session should go, making sure we didn’t repeat things that had already been said, or talk over each other, plus both keeping a high level of professionalism and maintaining rapport with the client (anyone in a long-term relationship will appreciate how much effort can be needed for this part)! Our first client was for weight loss and she seemed to be introvert in character at first, but she began to relax more and more as the therapy session continued, after the consultation process we asked our client to sit down on the comfy couch and prepared for the induction…

Using a ‘progressive relaxation’ approach, Chelsea and I found an immediate natural flow that became even more apparent on the deepening technique (staircase). Chelsea directing the client down each step, whilst with each pause, I would suggest ‘going deeper’, ‘relaxing more and more’ and other similar deepening phrases! With this dual approach, we were able to allow one person to talk to the client, giving positive suggestions for change, whilst the other person was given a chance to gather their thoughts and add suggestions or techniques they felt could help at that particular time! This was one of the most positive beneficial advantages of doing dual therapy, allowing one of us to continue talking whilst the other had some thinking space, which you get less of during one to one sessions, especially when unexpected circumstance arise and you need to think on your feet!

Those are the pros of dual therapy, but what about the cons? Well biting your tongue to not jump into a flowing conversation, whilst your partner is explaining something to the client (especially if you feel he/she missed something) is probably at Number 1! 🙂 Apart from the ironing of tiny creases, such as pre-talk flow, who will say what, coming together with an agreeable treatment plan, and allowing patience to let each other speak. The pros definitely outweigh the cons of dual therapy!

Dylan and Chelsea joint hypnosis freeing minds hypnotherapy

Having been working together for 5 months whilst doing dual therapy, we have definitely discovered a deeper respect and understanding for one another and how we are each very different (but complimentary) therapists in our own rights. Now, as we are starting our second year as hypnotherapists, we feel the knowledge and skills we have learnt from HypnoTC and the experience gained from seeing the clients we have seen to date, as well as engaging with other students/graduates on the HypnoTC forum and getting ongoing supervision from our tutors when needed, has given us so much confidence and knowledge. The excitement of continuing this journey is far, far greater than when we both started our journey!

If you want to learn hypnotherapy and join a course that’s very information/practical intensive and where you’ll really have to put in the work to get your qualification, we highly recommend HypnoTC. They give you all the tools you’ll need to adequately help clients with many different issues.

Now it’s time to get back to the clients…

It’s been 3 years since the last election for Profession Specific Board members for the CNHC (Complimentary & Natural Healthcare Council), where our very own Dr Kate Beaven-Marks was voted in to represent the hypnotherapy profession. The 2018 elections have just happened, and we’re happy to confirm that Kate has been re-elected as a Hypnotherapy Profession Specific Board member! HypnoTC tutor Rory Z Fulcher recently joined Chris and Dan on the Ascend Body Mind Podcast. The Ascend podcast covers many diverse topics and ideas, with a focus on the mind, consciousness, beliefs and “free-thinking”. With discussions about many different topics, Dan and Chris have podcasts on observing thoughts, the power of words, DNA, chanting, the mind, parallel universes, mindfulness, inner wisdom, magic, the afterlife, knowledge, drugs, immortality, dreams, collective consciousness…and much, much (much) more! Many of these discussions are broad, but have various applications to what we do as hypnotherapists, whether from a practical perspective, or from an “understanding your client’s beliefs” perspective, so well worth a listen!

There are many topics of discussion relating to hypnosis during this particular podcast, including the conscious and subconscious mind, beliefs, phobias, past life regression, mass hypnosis and suggestibility, to name but a few. Also, Rory gives a demonstration of a useful suggestibility test and locks Chris’ arm using the power of suggestion. A super fun podcast all-in-all!
